" The 'witnesses under examination were, as formerly, before the Whitsuntide adjournment, Messrs. Harrison and Gay, and the first item taken up related to the medical charges. " On this head nothing of moment was elicited. In reply to the Chairman, " Mr. Harrison stated that in 1856-57 the medical charges amounted to ?175,714, and in 1870-71 to ?523,486. There had been a very great increase in the scale of remuneration to medical officers, which had been partly caused by the measure of 1864, when assistant suvgeons had been promoted to the rnnk of surgeons, altogether irrespective of the number in that rank.
